One thing I learned after working on the "Streets of Manhattan" series thing I've been putting up lately is that street photography is just like noir film...on matter what you do, it inevitably and unceasingly and ANNOYINGLY begs to be in black and white.

The only reason why I left the majority of the photos in color was so I could see whether or not I could pull off leaving it in color...I think several of them would have looked better in BW, but whatever. I was seeing BW street shots everywhere...no color whatsoever.

I guess there's a reason why it's all mostly BW too...since generally they look perfect that way. haha.

Whatever.

After being inactive for a LONG time, I finally came back and did a mass upload with my eleven photo "The Night and Silence" series. I didn't think it was that great a set (I got lazy and rushed through some of the later photos), but it got more attention than I expected...like seventeen favorites and a couple comments. For my page, that's amazing.

It was taken in New Jersey on a cool foggy night that was fucking freezing...BUT...I got some good photos I guess.

Anyway, I'm gonna upload another set sometime in the next couple days of street shots I took in Manhattan...this one has 21 photos in it...lol. -___-;;

I still hate running photoshop on this shitty old laptop.

Yeah...what else is new? Equipment sucks shit.

I was at a retreat thing over the weekend, and I talked to a guy who brought his Nikon camera with a flash. I never realized what I was missing...even after just snapping a few quick shots and looking over what he'd taken himself. That thing totally fucked my mind up.

None of you have ANY idea (well...you probably do, actually) how much I struggled with and was frustrated by having to work with ambient lighting all the time; especially when I was on assignment for my school's paper back in the day...have you ever tried taking shots of people on a stupidly dimly lit stage in a lecture hall lit only by fluorescent lights 50 feet above you? Or god forbid, one of those poorly lit classrooms with a mish-mash of different kinds of bulbs...or even a fucking club or party, or omg...a concert...working only with the lighting available there?

A flash would have changed my life back then...lol...but I never knew. T_T

I've moved a flash to the top of my list of need-to-get items, along with a good general use zoom lens.

I love my 50mm prime, but 80mm is getting to be bothersome indoors and when taking group shots...or landscapes and whatnot. The IQ is absolutely mind-boggling, but as far as overall practicality/application goes, it lacks, as all prime lenses do, I suppose.

I would love to get something like a 17mm wide angle, but they're too expensive. I'm looking at Tamron's 17-50mm lens (or is it 18-50?). It's f/2.8, which is good enough I guess (I've been spoiled by my prime's f/1.4 madness), and I heard its IQ is, while still inferior to, is at least comparable to Canon's 24-70mm f/2.8. That lens is an absolute masterpiece, but I'm gonna wait 'til Canon finally decides to pull their heads out of their asses and release an IS version before I even think about cutting off a leg and purchasing one.

Back to flashes, though...I would love a 580exx speedlite or whatever the latest and greatest thing is, but at like ~$400, it'd cost more than the Tamron lens. I guess I'll have to settle for the 400-something whatever the number is for the slave one. As long as it tilts, rotates and has adjustable flash intensity, s'all good, right?

god, I need to win the fucking lottery...

Woohoo.

I've decided to lay low on the photography stuff for a while. It was getting too stressful trying to keep everything together...there were conflicting schedules, problems with capabilities (both my own and from the limited equipment I have), problems with cooperation from the clients (I use that term loosely), and whatever the fuck else.

However, the biggest issue was the future I could see myself in going through with all this. It wasn't one I had very much faith in.

With that, it's going back to becoming my full-time hobby/passion/what have you.

I finally got this old camera I found in my grandmother's garage working. It's a Polaroid 210 Land Camera. It uses old peel-apart film, or current 660 series film.

I shot some old type 107 black and white film, which has to be at least 35 years old. The camera was made in 1968.

I love the decadent and gritty and unpolished look the photos give. I'll post them up once I scan them.

Cheers.

The biggest and most complicated thing I've done in my short time as a "serious" photographer.

I've uploaded the final photos here...they're not particularly good, but I like to think of them as a learning experience for me.  I learned a lot...mostly about my own shortcomings in skill, but hey...we all start somewhere.

Do check them out, and please leave some critique.  The lighting was impossible to work with...so I'd appreciate comments on that more than anything else.

Thanks for stopping by.
